How To Protect Your Home During Hurricane Season

Hurricane materials

June 1st marked the beginning of hurricane season. Lucky us, right? August is usually the month we are hit the hardest, but there is no time like the present to start prepping before then!

The local news station wants to make sure everyone understands their evacuation zones. Here at Contract Exteriors, we want to make sure you are fully aware of how to protect your home in the event of a hurricane.

The Tools We Use

Hurricane preparation can seem tedious and overwhelming, but can help prevent an expensive cleanup, if done properly.

We suggest you begin by cleaning your gutters and downspouts to insure water flows away from your home. Put away lawn furniture and toys before a storm hits. You don’t want them to land in your neighbor’s yard! Trim your trees and remove any dead branches. And, make sure you have a working generator, just in case the power goes out.

When you think about the different ways you could protect your home during hurricane season, there is one question you should ask.

How would a contractor protect his own home?

There are four products we use and love. Each one is as durable as it is easy to use and we highly recommend each of them!

  • Fabric Shutters are easy to clean and easy to store when not in use. Impact resistant, and no special tools required to install or remove.
  • Hurricane Proof Shutters are rated for up to 150-mph winds and come in great styles and colors.
  • James Hardie fiber cement siding, resists the impact of windblown debris and hail. It has a 130-mph wind rating. Plus, it does not expand or crack in the moisture of storm season.
  • GAF shingles have gone through lengthy durability testing. These shingles stand up against 110-mph winds and are leak resistant.

We all want to feel safe in our homes, especially in the middle of a storm. Our homes are an investment worth protecting!
